ASAPS Offers Guidelines for Evaluating Teen Patients

Main image:

Statistics gathered by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons over the last several years indicate a decrease in the overall number of teenagers, younger then 18, seeking cosmetic surgeries. The most frequently performed surgical procedure for this age group in 2012 were cosmetic otoplasty, followed by rhinoplasty, breast reduction and gynecomastia.
The ASAPS notes that for appropriately selected teenage patients, cosmetic plastic surgery can have a positive impact on physical and emotional development.

Preparing the Canvas

Facelift patients have great expectations for their surgery outcomes, but not all aging concerns of the face can be addressed with lifting alone. By combining surgery with pre- and post-operative skincare and thorough patient education, surgeons are finding that they can achieve better patient satisfaction and optimal, longer-lasting results.

Phone Staff Scripting

A ringing telephone represents an opportunity, and it is one of the most powerful marketing tools in your practice. The average plastic surgery facility fails to convert more than 100 telephone inquiries every year because it either doesn’t answer its phones promptly, or someone answers rudely or with disinterest. If a call is handled correctly, it will be the first of many calls to your practice. If a call is not handled correctly, it is the first and last call to your practice. You lose not only that prospective patient but also referrals to her friends, family and colleagues.

Low Centrifuge Preserves Fat Graft Viability

Strong centrifuge of fat (900g/three minutes) leads to a three-fold increase in adipocyte death when compared to fat that was prepared using low centrifuge (400g/one minute). For “Effect of centrifugation and washing on adipose graft viability: A new method to improve graft efficiency” (Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, May 2013), French researchers Laurence Hoareau, et al, subjected harvested adipose tissue to multiple levels of centrifuge before injecting it into immunodeficient mice.

Fear of Poor Results Holds Patients Back

Fear of a poor result is the most commonly cited reason why consumers who are interested in plastic surgery fail to pursue procedures, according to a recent study in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal (March 2013). Charles Galanis, MD, et al, surveyed 96 patients—81 women and 15 men—in the waiting rooms of nonsurgical aesthetic clinics to gain data for “Factors Influencing Patient Interest in Plastic Surgery.” They found that 20% of the patients were currently considering plastic surgery, while 78% were considering surgery in the future.
